Destination Based Dispatch
Destination dispatch technology employs sophisticated algorithms to enhance traffic flow in multi-elevator buildings. By consolidating passengers with similar destinations into one elevator, these systems notably diminish both travel durations and waiting periods compared to conventional elevators. Passengers input their desired floor via a keypad or touch screen interface in the lobby, and are subsequently directed to the elevator best suited to transport them to their destination. Beyond simply cutting wait and travel times, destination dispatch systems enhance the overall efficiency of elevator operations by minimizing the total number of trips, stops, and starts—thereby reducing energy consumption, a significant boon for building owners.

For many urban residents and workers, navigating their daily routines often involves frequent elevator usage, whether it’s leaving their high-rise apartment, entering their office tower, or running errands. Elevators are indispensable for efficiently traversing these towering structures. As tall buildings continue to proliferate, elevator systems remain integral, requiring facility management to prioritize occupant flow and safety considerations.
The conventional approach to elevator operation seems straightforward: users call for an elevator using “up” or “down” arrows, select their desired direction, enter the appropriate elevator, and then choose a floor. While this method aims to accommodate maximum destinations and loads per car, it may not be the most time-efficient. In today’s high-rise landscape, traditional elevator dispatching often struggles to effectively distribute users to their destinations. Clearly, there’s room for improvement in optimizing elevator operations.
I can provide a real-life example of how Destination Based Dispatch (DBD) systems operate in a commercial building. A renowned US brand, Motion Control Engineering, under Nidec Group, implemented DBD in a Chicago facility. However, they faced a challenge: while the building had 16 floors, there were 20 landings. To address this, they implemented a two-way entrance system with 10 elevator cars grouped into two sets, each with different speeds (3.5 m/s and 2.5 m/s). The building management prioritized security and incorporated a specialized system where badge swiping at turnstiles validated identities and directed individuals to their designated floors through visual and audio instructions.
Upon immediate access to a predetermined elevator, passengers confirm their destination on the door jamb. Additionally, visitors can check in at the reception to gain access to exclusive floors. This technology seamlessly adapts to dynamic building traffic conditions. Notably, all cards utilize a single dispatcher and are fully integrated with the building system, which can be monitored and configured via internet connectivity.

DBD placement: The system is designed to consider the placement of each touchscreen and elevator within its programming. When a user input their destination and is assigned an elevator, the system calculates the distance to reach that elevator, ensuring it’s within accessible reach. This eliminates the need to position touchscreens near the elevator bank and allows for better traffic distribution in the lobby. Unlike conventional systems where users wait centrally, unsure which elevator will arrive, in a destination system, individuals naturally gravitate towards their designated elevator.
Customized User Experience: Building managers can customize access permissions for different “from:” combinations, requiring occupants to swipe a card or enter a pin code, with variations based on time and day. Users can also personalize their experience, such as receiving voice announcements for direction, specifying proximity to the call station, or requesting extra time or space due to mobility aids. Occupants can manage their own settings via the touchscreens.
Functioning Hospital: Hospitals present a challenge because elevators serve various functions: transporting staff, patients, equipment, food, and waste. Emergencies and non-emergencies might use the same elevators. The system can be customized using access cards to prioritize specific individuals and functions. In an emergency, the nearest elevator would automatically resume regular operation after being dispatched for an expedited trip.
Elevator quantity, floors, and occupancy: The system’s effectiveness scales with the number of elevators. It’s suitable for mid- to high-rise buildings, with customization options based on floor size and population. Installation is feasible in new constructions or existing buildings with compatible equipment.
